Sandy Esau

Sandy initially used the library at School to extend his knowledge of art techniques.

He received exposure of his art by appearing on the front page of the Rapport Newspaper and through that received a bursary to study at Ruth Prowse Art School. He was taught and mentored by Judith Mason, Eric Loubser and Ryno Swart.

After his studies he worked as a Snoek Fisherman, which he did not enjoy, and then at the Koeberg Power Station for three years, painting inbetween.

Sandy became a full time artist in 2001. Shortly afterwards Sandy, George Meyer and Solomon Siko visited me and began exhibiting in Bay Gallery.

Sadly, their friend and well known artist, Solomon Siko, died in 2008.

Sandy works in oil and acrylic mostly, on canvas or board, and will occasionally use the technique used by all three friends of carving into board with an angle grinder and then applying paint.

Sandy's paintings are in private collections in South Africa and in many other countries.

His favourite subjects are the people and places he knows so well, fishermen and boats, musicians and dancers and street scenes in his vibrant style. So colourful and full of life and movement.

Sad news indeed. Sandy died unexpectedly on Saturday, 2nd January, 2021. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Condolences to his wife, Natasha, and their children. Rest in Peace Sandy.
