Joan Schrauwen

Joan, well known in her own right, comes from a family of artists. Her Grandfather was Tinus de Jongh who arrived from Holland in 1921. He was well known for his landscapes as was his son, Gabriel, Joan's Uncle. Her mother painted too. Joan is married with 3 children and 8 grandchildren who all love painting.

Joan has had many exhibitions over the years. In 1982 she held an exhibition in oil and sold every painting. She made a limited edition of quality prints but very few are left. There are a few available from Bay Gallery. She has also entered her bird paintings at exhibitions at Kirstenbosch.

Some of her favourite subjects to paint or etch are birds, flowers and otters. She lives on the banks of the Berg River so has an endless supply of material right there. She loves to paint in different media, using collage and pen and ink besides watercolour, pastel and oil and really captures her subjects exquisitely.

Joan arrived on the West Coast in 1990 and compiled a wonderful coffee table book with photographer Peter Pickford - "West Coast: A Circle of Seasons" and has written a couple of novels since then. She owned her own Gallery in Velddrif but sold the property in 2008.

Bay Gallery has been fortunate to exhibit and sell Joan's paintings since 2006 and loves to receive new artwork from Joan. Always something special.
